India Vs Australia World Cup Final: This Is What Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Said On India’s Loss
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, recently admitted to staying up all night to watch the India-New Zealand World Cup semi-final before attending a conference. He was asked about India's loss in the World Cup final and jokingly asked if he would consider "buying Australia." Nadella laughed and compared it to buying OpenAI. Altman, who was rumored to be joining Microsoft, was confirmed not to be joining OpenAI. During a keynote address, Nadella expressed surprise that the conference was scheduled on the same day as the World Cup semi-final. Nadella is a cricket fan and plans to build a cricket stadium in Seattle.
Satya Nadella's love for cricket is a well-known fact. He recently admitted to staying up all night to watch the India-New Zealand World Cup semi-final thriller just before attending the Microsoft Ignite 2023 developer conference. And amid the Altman-OpenAI drama was the India vs Australia world cup final, which India lost. However, it seems that Nadella had a win with Altman joining Microsoft, at least for now.
During a podcast with journalist Kara Swisher, where the two discussed the ongoing drama at Microsoft's partner OpenAI, Sam Altman's ousting from the company, Nadella was asked about India's loss in the ODI World Cup in the interview. Nadella was asked whether he is thinking of "buying Australia" following India's loss in the World Cup final.
“The India and Australia cricket thing, I'm so sorry for you there, but are you thinking of buying Australia now?” Kara Swisher jokingly asked him. “That would be like buying OpenAI. None of those can be accomplished, but we can partner well with OpenAI and enjoy Aussies playing cricket,” Satya Nadella said, laughing.
Over the weekend, the internet was filled with memes and jokes about Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's dilemma of choosing between watching cricket and dealing with the OpenAI drama. However, on Monday, the OpenAI board confirmed that Altman is not joining the company, and Nadella quickly made an announcement that he will be joining Microsoft as the CEO of the company's new advanced AI research unit. Though, he does not seem completely sure of Altman coming to Microsoft.
After the World Cup final, Nadella posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Congratulations to Australia on winning the World Cup! Great run to the finals, India.”
During the Microsoft Ignite 2023 developer conference, Nadella gave the keynote address. He revealed that he stayed up all night to watch India's World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, which ended in India's 70-run victory.

Upon arriving on stage, “And I’ve been up all night, but it finished five minutes ago. I am glad it did. This is the short version of the game, by the way.” Nadella expressed surprise that the conference was scheduled on the same day as the World Cup semi-final match, saying, “Little did we know when we scheduled Ignite that we will schedule it on the day when there is World Cup semi-final going on, in cricket.”
Satya Nadella has been an avid cricket fan and even played cricket during his school days. In an interview, he said that he learned valuable lessons on teamwork and leadership through the sport.
Nadella is also the co-owner of Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket. And he plans to build a cricket stadium in Seattle where Microsoft's Redmond campus already has an oval-shaped ground.
